Glucosamine
is reported to stimulate the body's manufacture of collagen,
the protein portion of the fibrous substance that holds joints
together. Collagen is the main component of the shock-absorbing
cushion called articular cartilage—the white smooth surface
which covers the ends of body joints—such as those in the wrist,
fingers, toes, ankles, knees, hips and between the discs of
the spine. It has been used and studied in Europe and Asia for
over 40 years. In one of these double-blind clinical trials,
a glucosamine/chondroitin compound was found to ease the aches
and pains of arthritis sufferers as well as standard painkillers.
This is very significant when one considers that ibuprofen and
acetaminophen can cause stomach upset, ulcers, and even kidney
and liver damage. Glucosamine, on the other hand, appears to
have very few side effects. Further research indicates that
glucosamine may even help to rebuild damaged cartilage and deteriorating
joints. Effective for animals, too
